The Wilbarger County District Attorney's Office says Ridge got a 38 year prison sentence thanks to a homeowner's sense of smell.
Authorities say last February a mother came home with her three children and found the house had been broken into and ransacked.
The woman noticed two things first. Her laptop was missing and there was a strong odor of men's cologne throughout the house.
She took her children out of the house and spotted her next door neighbor's boyfriend coming out her door and asked him if he had seen anyone in the area and soon smelled the same heavy cologne odor.
She accused him of being in her home, and he cursed at her and left.
When the next door neighbor came home, she gave police consent to search the home.
Officers say they found the laptop and other missing items inside, in addition to a bottle of men's cologne.
The odor matched that in the victim's home and the prints on the laptop matched Ridge's.
