Heated Discussion at City Council Over Banning Phone Use in Vehicles

No decision this morning on whether drivers in Wichita Falls will be banned from using cell phones without hands free devices.

The code  amendment would ban drivers from using  wireless communication devices  while a vehicle is not fully in park unless it is an emergency call.

Right now, cell phone use while driving is only banned in school zones.

Today some councilors stated the proposed amendment would bring  too much government regulation and one said he would like to leave the decision to officers on what behavior while driving is considered reckless.

The Texas Department of Transportation and the Police Chief are in support of the ordinance.

Once the city attorney looks over feedback from the meeting, he could bring an adjusted version of the ordinance back at a future meeting.
