The Henrietta High School Spelling and Vocabulary Team won the UIL 2A State Championship on Wednesday, May 22. This team advanced to the state meet by winning both the district and regional meets this spring. Members of the team include Miranda Flores, Matthew Mitchell, Justin Caldwell, and Garen McGhee.
Flores was crowned the individual state champion in Spelling and Vocabulary with a score of 94.
Mitchell won second place at the state meet with a score of 92.
Caldwell, a senior, earned 9th place at this year's state meet.
This team is coached by Laurie Schaffner, an English teacher at Henrietta H.S.
Henrietta High School's Literary Criticism won second place medals at the state meet on Wednesday, beating their arch rivals from Holliday. Team members include Crystal Kroes, Katelyn Suneson, Danielle Holmes, and Krystal DeLucio. This team is coached by Connie Johnson who teaches senior English at HHS.
Kroes, a senior, earned the second place individual honors at the state meet.
Suneson, who finished 2nd at the regional meet a month ago, earned 5th place honors at state.
Rounding out the team's scores was Holmes who garnered a 6th place finish.
Henrietta High School finished in a 6th place tie as a team out of 58 schools that competed in the events at the state meet.
