Next month's election will decide the fate of Holliday's School Facilities Improvement Plan.
This fall Holliday's School Board put an emphasis on developing a long-range facilities plan with a proposed implementation time line.
The school board is calling for a $15 million bond which could increase the property tax rate by 33 cents for the next 25 years.
But school officials say these improvements are greatly needed to provide their students with a better education.
It's a quite day at Holliday school's campuses.
Everyone home from school for a weather day.
Only a couple of students can be spotted practicing their skills at the plate.
Those kids who will be affected by a bond election next month
The bond issue will decide whether Holliday's junior high and high school gets the improvements school officials say are greatly needed.
"The high school and junior high have not had many major renovations. We are having issues with the high school's roof so it needs to be replaced," said Douglas Lindemann, Holliday's School Board President.
They also say there facilities are too small to house students.
Two science labs which serve over 450 students were built in the 70's.
They also want to expand the library, create an additional gymnasium and update facilities to provide more safety and more accessibility to technology for students.
The total bond is 15 million dollars and would be for 25 years.
Property tax rates for residents in Holliday would rise by 33 cents.
"Weigh the bonds on its merits, is there a need, has the process been open, and then all of us have to make our decision are our taxes going up that amount worth meeting the needs of our students," said Kevin Dyes, Holliday ISD's superintendent.
"I am a tax payer I understand, it's a concern I have as well, we obviously want to be wise with the tax payers money, we feel like this is the right approach, the needs are there," said Lindemann.
School officials hope residents will see those needs, and invest in the city's children by voting for the bond.
Early voting goes through May 7th.
Election day is on may 11th.
