Hotter 'N Hell Hundred about more than just the ride for some

Cheryl Daugherty’s family were all avid cyclists and the Hotter N Hell Hundred became almost like a family reunion. Then three years ago tragedy struck while her husband Carl was training in the final days before the race.

“The week before the ride he was doing his last ride and he said don’t wait on me I’m going to be late,” Daugherty said. “I’m going to do like 79 miles today. So, we said goodbye to him and he went out the door. He didn’t come back. At ten minutes to 12 that night, the police showed up at our door and said my husband had been hit by a vehicle and he had brain injuries and he was in the hospital.”

Carl died nine days later, but a few months before that he made a decision that would save other people’s live.

“When he got his driver’s license that year he was so excited he came back and said I’m an organ donor it’s going to be on my driver’s license not knowing that a few months later he was going to die,” Daugherty said.

Michelle Linss was suffered from a rare liver condition and had been on the transplant list for about two years.

“The hardest part was knowing that someone else had to die so I could live,” Linss said.
Linss received Carl’s liver and a new lease on life. The anniversary of her transplant is on Tuesday and since Carl loved the Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred so much, she felt coming to the event was a great way to honor him.

“I feel so humbled and so responsible to make sure that I am making Carl proud and making their family proud of who I am and who I will continue to be,” Linss said.

And she says she may even be brave enough to take on the big ride in the future, something she would only be able to do thanks to the incredible strength of the Daugherty family during their great time of loss.
