Icy Roads Keep Body Shops Busy

- The Wichita Falls Police Department says icy weather over the weekend caused a total of 72 confirmed car accidents.

And, as wrecks pile up, so does the number of people who need to get their car fixed.

Jim Arnold says phones were ringing a lot more Monday than normal at his collision shop.

But, an increase in calls does not necessarily add up to an increase in work, at least for now. Before most people get their car fixed they have to go through their insurance companies.

When roads and bridges get icy, cars can start sliding off the road.

Most of the wrecks this past weekend caused bumper and front end damage.

“People slide off the highway into the ditches and of course not being able to stop because it is slick,” says Jim Arnold, who owns Jim Arnold Collision.

And even though repair shops expect an increase in business when winter weather starts, there is no way to plan ahead.

“Basically take each one as them come in, you can't hardly predict it's like a storm comes in sometimes being in north Texas the weather can change. It goes from one thing to another so if you count on things you can get let down,” says Arnold.

Even though he can't plan for the number of wrecks,  Arnold says you can take steps to be proactive about avoiding one.

“Put the cell phone down, keep a clear distance between the vehicles in front of you and if you do have to be there at a set designated time, just go ahead and get up a little earlier,” says Arnold.

Arnold says even if it looks like your car has very little damage or you don't think you can afford to get it fixed,  it's always better to get it checked because what may look like a surface issue could actually be a safety concern.
