The first of what are expected to be several hundred immigrant children have begun arriving at Fort Sill.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services told us there are about 400 children at the temporary facilities on the post. He says they began arriving Saturday.

Between 600 and 1200 unaccompanied immigrant children will temporarily be housed on the post in vacant facilities last used by soldiers in April.

Government officials say thousands of minors, mostly from Central America, began crossing the American border to escape crime and poverty.

The plan has angered Governor Mary Fallin and many Republicans who oppose the post being used for non-military functions.
