Insurance Tips: Preparing Your Home or Car Before Severe Weather

WICHITA FALLS, TX - The official start of storm season is quickly approaching, so now is the time to put a plan into place.

Alfred Dizon is a car and homeowner who says it is important to understand and know your insurance coverage policy -- especially in the North Texas area.

"Cause here you don't know when the tornado is going to hit. And if it does, at least you got some replacement. They can cover you," Dizon said.

And State Farm Agent Tracey Denson said the busy spring season for storm damage related claims is right around the corner.

He said in 2016, Texas had 66,000 hail claims, while the closest following state to that -- Illinois -- only had 16,600.

"And what you can do to prepare first is -- I would recommend that you would talk with your agent. Your insurance agent. Make sure you understand what coverages you have and what you don't have. Also understand what your deductibles and ask them a little about the claim process to make sure that they understand -- you understand -- what to do when you have a claim," Denson said.

Denson also recommends if you are considering getting a new roof  -- to get a class 4, impact-resistant roof.

Before a storm, get cars under cover and lower the drapes and blinds to reduce flying glass if it breaks.

Also, if you do need work done after the storm, then bring on a local contractor, get three different estimates and do not pay a large part of the bill ahead of time.

"I always recommend local. And the reason for that is -- you can get referrals on local contractors. Once they finish the job, if there's a problem, they're always going to be available," Denson said.

Denson said take an inventory of all of your property through pictures, video and/or a list -- in case you lose any property.

Something Dizon will now keep in mind.

"No, but that's a good idea. Thank you for telling me. Now I can go home and take pictures of what I've got," Dizon said.

If you need temporary or emergency, quick repairs, then save the receipts because some policies may cover that and you can submit them when you file a claim.
