Johnson Guilty of Indecency With a Child

- It took an 89th District Court jury less than an hour to reach a verdict in the case against a man accused of molesting three girls.

They found 56-year-old Kurley Johnson guilty on all three counts of indecency with a child by contact after about 50 minutes of deliberation.

Prosecutors say he touched three girls over their clothes between their legs on separate occasions.

Johnson took the witness stand and testified he never did anything to the alleged victims that could be interpreted as inappropriate touching.

Defense attorneys brought up Johnson's past offenses, including a possession of cocaine conviction, three counts of bail jumping, and using an automobile without the owner's consent.

Johnson testified that he took responsibility and pleaded guilty to all those offenses because he was studying to become a minister and wanted to put his past behind him, but during cross examination, lead prosecutor Starla Jones admitted Johnson's conviction records into evidence.

She says those show he pleaded "no contest" to the offenses, so he didn't take full responsibility for them.

Johnson began laughing during Jones' questioning.

She asked him why he was laughing, to which he asked if he should be crying instead.

Court was briefly recessed as Judge Mark Price asked defense attorneys to instruct their client on how to answer questions while in court.

During closing arguments, defense attorneys argued the alleged victims got their stories mixed up with one another's which shows what they're alleging isn't true.

Jones argued that Johnson was grooming the girls by buying them things, hugging them, kissing one on the forehead, and by texting one of the alleged victims, which Johnson claims he didn't mean to do.

The punishment phase of the trial is expected to begin Thursday morning.

He faces two to 20 years in prison plus a $10-thousand fine on each count.
