Justice of the Peace Announces Retirement

Before Judge Little officially hangs up his robe for good, he took time today to reflect on what the last six terms have been like.

January1,1995 was the first day Judge Mike Little took office as a Justice of the Peace. He says he has no idea how many times he has climbed the court house steps, but he says it was a lot easier when he first took the job.

“When I first started here, I'd run up these steps two at a time,” Little said. “I said I don't do that anymore. I'm lucky if I get one at a time and make it to the top.”

Judge Little says although a lot of what he has dealt with over the years has been tragic he says watching people who approached his bench turn their lives around is one part of this job he really enjoyed.

“Watching a lot of young people who were heading for a disaster turn it around and become successful young people,” Little said. “I get more joy out of that than just about anything.”

Judge Janice Sons has worked closely with Judge Little and said replacing him will not be easy.

“Working 25 years next to him, I have nothing but positive things and I want to tell you those are big shoes to fill,” Sons said. “Somebody that is smart, somebody that takes care of business and somebody that is really there for me too. That's a selfish thing.”

Even though he has a little more than a year until he officially retires, he is already looking forward to hitting the road.

“Well, I have a nice shiny red motorcycle, I plan to utilize that quite a bit and whatever my wife has set forth for me,” Little said. “Other than that, I've maybe thought about teaching but that's down the road we will see what happens

Before he was elected and started this daily trek, now more than two decades ago Judge Little was on the Wichita Falls police force, so he can soon enjoy whatever retirement brings after spending most of his life and career in public service.
