Latest Changes To Proposed Smoking Ban

- The proposed Wichita Falls smoking ordinance goes to the city council for a vote Tuesday, and more changes have been made in an effort to find an ordinance that will satisfy both sides.

The latest change is to give bars and also restaurants that now have separate smoking sections a two year exemption period after the ordinance takes effect.

If passed, the ordinance bans smoking in work places, within 20 feet of the entrance of a public place, or 5 feet if children under age of 18 are not allowed in the public place.

Tobacco and electronic cigarette stores are exempt from the ban.

The 5 foot distance was changed from the original proposal in an attempt to meet bar owners needs.

The two year grandfather clause would not apply to businesses that open after June 17, which would have to ban smoking immediately.
