Man Gets Maximum Sentence for Animal Cruelty

A man charged with beating and stabbing a neighbor's dog in retaliation for an attack on his own dog was given the maximum sentence for animal cruelty.

James Leroy Sims, 37, received 12 months in state jail with 116 days credit for time served. He also received 12 months for possession of meth. He was also give credit for time served on sentences for 3 counts of public intoxication.

Sims was arrested in April after a witness told police he saw Sims grab a dog on 7th Street, punch it, and then stab it with a knife. He said Sims then left the dog bleeding on the ground. He also said Sims told him he was going to kill the dog because it had attacked his dog.

The injured dog's owner told us she spent hundreds of dollars on treatment for her dog.
