On August, 27, just after 3:30 p.m., a 9-1-1 call was received by the Wichita Falls Police Department in reference to an aggravated robbery in which the alleged victim, 23-year-old Kelly Lloyd Wells, reported that he picked up a hispanic male hitchhiker and was shot and robbed by the hitchhiker at the intersection of Reilly Rd and Wellington Ln. Wells drove himself to the ER where he was treated for a gunshot wound.
Police responded to the area where the alleged aggravated robbery took place and set up a perimeter. An extensive manhunt for the suspect took place involving the Wichita Falls Police Department, Wichita County Sheriff's Office, Texas DPS, and Allred Prison. After a lengthy search, the alleged suspect was not found and the scene was cleared.
Wells later admitted to police during the investigation that no robbery had taken place and that he had accidentally shot himself.
On Monday, an arrest warrant for False Report was issued and Wells turned himself in. Bond is set at $5,000.
