Meals on Wheels Says Summer Time Leaves Them With Few Volunteers

Meals on Wheels in Wichita Falls says their volunteer numbers are low, with many folks out of town for the summer months, but dropping off meals to residents in need never takes a vacation.

RC Taylor's Wednesday afternoon consists of delivering meals to seniors who have difficulty leaving their homes.

He says it was nine years ago when he fell into the roll as a Meals on Wheels weekly deliverer, and hasn't looked back since.

"I just feel like that's what we are here for, is to serve and I really enjoy doing this," Taylor said.

Meals on Wheels says they prepare and deliver about 750 meals on any given day in Wichita Falls and currently have 65 people on a waiting list to receive meals.

But those meals can't be delivered without volunteers.

And right now they say they're already short 30 people to help with deliveries to people like Nancianne Russell.

"I can't stand up and cook at the stove, my oven has gone out anyway," she said.

But for Russell the delivery is more than a meal she picks up at her door.

"I've got a friend coming around, it's kind of lonely, my mother was my only friend," she said.
"Y ou really build a relationship with these people you are not just somebody just dropping off a meal, it's not really a hand out it's a hand up,"  Taylor said.

A helping hand made possible by just a simple delivery.
