Midwestern State University hopes to recruit students outside of Texoma

Midwestern State University's affordability is one of the main selling points for prospective students and the university hopes more students across Texas will consider coming to Wichita Falls to earn their diplomas.

Nearly 6,000 students attend MSU.

Director of Admissions Barbara Merkle says it is a diverse campus with students from different parts of Texas and around the world.

Merkle says the school is doing what it can to recruit students from outside Texoma.

Erin Minihan is about to start her junior year at Midwestern.

She says her decision to attend MSU was an easy one after visiting other colleges and university in Texas.

Minihan says, "I went to three different schools and I never had that homey feeling. I didn't have that warm fuzzy feeling but when I came here and I first stepped into the campus area, I was like 'This is it. This is for me.'"

Minihan is from the Dallas area and like any other student, going off to college was something she really wanted to do.

"This was close enough to home but far away to where I can actually gain my independence," Minihan.

Despite its size, MSU competes with bigger schools by offering all the necessary amentities like competitive programs in business and health sciences.

Minihan says, "It's a university instead of a community college but you still get the dorm experience, the greek experience in the small school.

Merkle says a lot of parents and students do look for smaller campuses because of the affordability and access to faculty and coaches.

"Those students are looking for schools our size and when they're comparing coming to a school like Midwestern or staying in the Metroplex and going to institutions in the Metroplex, there's no other school our size," Merkle says.

She adds the use of special marketing will help get college bound students interested in coming to Wichita Falls.

Merkle says really branding MSU with slogans like "It's my university, Make it you", doing subliminal marketing, and using university colors is all part of the plan.

Recruitment extends across Texas and Oklahoma but the best sellers are the campus and the student body.

"Our MSU students are our best recruiters. They tell the message that we. I can't pay for that type of connection," Merkle says.

Minihan is happy with her decision to become Mustang.

"I've made a great choice. I love my major. I love my friends. It's an awesome school. It's really nice to know that I can call this my second home," Minihan says.

Midwestern State says the school also has about 500 international students.

Areas outside recruiting officers will receive pamphlets describing MSU in hopes off showing future students what the school has to offer.
