Mosquitoes Flooding the Wichita Falls Area

- Rain can help bring rise to mosquitoes but Wichita Falls health officials say the mosquito population was a growing problem before the rain started.

Health officials say the increase in rain barrels around town is contributing to more mosquitoes on the search for a blood meal. They say it's because many rain collectors are not covering their containers so those those are providing great places for mosquitoes to breed.

Health officials say crews are battling the insects by treating standing water around town but for now, their increasing population has crews losing the battle.

"We are spraying continuously right now but the mosquitoes are emerging every day and that's why there hasn't been much of a decline," says Stephanie Fonville, with vector control at Wichita Falls - Wichita County Public Health District.

Health officials say they have received dozens of mosquito calls.

They say the most came in last week when they got 78 mosquito complaints on Thursday and nearly 100 on Friday.
