New Custodial Service Week One, WFISD Officials Pleased

WICHITA FALLS, TX - WFISD officials say they're very pleased with their new custodial service after it's first week with the school district.

Back in December, the school board decided to sever ties with Aramark Custodial Services and switch to GCA Services Group after receiving numerous complaints about cleanliness throughout the district.

Back in September, at least three student athletes at Rider tested positive for staph, that and various complaints about cleanliness throughout the district led WFISD to end the contract with Aramark and enter into a new one with GCA.

"We want clean facilities. Students are all over the place. They're on the floor, they're in desks, they're leaning up against walls, that's just part of a learning environment. We want an active learning environment. Well, in order for that to happen it has to be clean," Michael Kuhrt, WFISD superintendent, said.

Kuhrt says GCA, a company that has worked in the district before in 2007 and 2012, is very organized and great at communicating with them, which was one of the main problems with Aramark.

He says GCA also has more supervisors.

"With custodial services, they're independent in their efforts. We have day crews and night crews and supervising that staff and making sure that continuity between the day and night staff has to be there," Kuhrt said.

The new three million dollar contract with GCA is just over $300,000 more than Aramark, but board members say the extra cost is worth it because making sure students and staff within the school district have clean facilities is a top priority

Kuhrt says so far GCA has hired 114 employees, which is up about 20 employees from the number Aramark had, and they plan on hiring even more.

Officials did not have exact numbers on how many former Aramark employees were hired by GCA.
