New program targeting young readers

WICHITA FALLS - A program unlike any other is giving parents the chance to teach their children from the comfort of their own homes.

Charisse Humphreys told us, "I'm always looking for ways, I guess, to get my child ahead, make sure that when he does enter the school system that I've done everything I can to make sure he knows what those teachers need him to know."

Humphreys has a 4-year-old and a 1st grader, she said she's excited about the new Upstart Pre-Reading Program, one she wished would have been available before her older child ever started school.

She added, "Right now, a lot of the things that the district does offer, it's not able to offer to its employees, it's all income based or certain programs have certain grant requirements."

Humphreys is also a teacher in the WFISD and is impressed by what all the program has to offer.

Director for Early Learning, Travis Armstrong said,  "It offers a device, a Chromebook specifically for the child to use in their home to spend 20 minutes a week receiving reading and literacy instruction, math and science instruction."

Humphreys continued by saying, "It's required 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week. We've got 7 days out of the week surely we can fit 20 minutes in that is dedicated to just that child."

Other educators and parents are excited about how the program uses technology.

K'Lea McDonald also has a son in the program. She told us, "He loves to be on the computer so I think that would be something that he's excited to do and doesn't think that its just work, work, work that he'll want to get on the computer and want to learn."

That's the idea, to light a passion in children and foster a love for learning, as these educators know it's crucial the tiniest students develop strong literacy skills early on.

The program also gets into some math and science lessons as well but is geared to ensuring your child is a strong reader!

There are currently only 10 slots available for the program if you would like to sign up, just visit Waterford Upstart and click on pre-register.
