New Year Could Mean a Fresh Start for Your Savings Account

- A new year means a new opportunity to accomplish things you didn't have the chance to get done last year.

And financial experts say cleaning up your finances is a good way to reach your goals.

Gary Silverman with Personal Money Planning says paying off your credit cards is a good way to start making a change.

He says instead of just making your minimum payment you should try to pay off as much as you can each month.

Silverman says there is no "one size fits all" budget, so you need to find a plan that works for you.

And he say saving money early is important for people at all financial levels.

“Ask anybody and they'll say it should have been a lot longer ago then what we did and that's the wisdom of the ages, begin now. If you are earning money, you need to know where that money is going,” says Silverman.

Silverman says the start of the new year is a great time to check your credit score, which will help you get ready for tax season.
