Newly Released Video Shows Explosion on American Airlines Jet

(Unidentified passenger )
"I'm thinking the plane's going to blow up! 20 seconds later, and we would have all been dead."

Newly released video shows just how close an American Airlines jet came to disaster during takeoff in Chicago last year.

The American Airlines 767 was in the process of taking off for Miami on October 28th when a fan disk in the right engine flew apart severing a fuel line. The right side of the plane became engulfed in flames.

The pilot brought the burning plane to a stop. Fire crews arrived and blasted fire retardant foam on the aircraft. The plane's flight data recorder showed the fan disk exploded 23 seconds into the takeoff.. as the plane was traveling almost 150 miles-per-hour.

If the plane had gone airborne the likely result would have been a fiery crash. Flight attendants managed to get all 161 passengers off the plane in two-minutes-and-21-seconds.

Only one passenger suffered significant injuries and that came during the evacuation, not the fire itself. The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating the accident.
