Officials Kick Off Municipal Airport Construction with Groundbreaking

Construction for phase one of Wichita Falls Municipal Airport will soon get underway.
With the tossing of dirt during a groundbreaking this morning, city councilors and officials declared the project is ready to get started.
The project consists of three phases.
During phase one, construction crews will build a new parking lot and airport entry ways.
That construction should be complete within the next year.
Then, crews will work on the next two phases: constructing a new terminal building and aircraft apron.
Mayor Glenn Barham says this project is about more than simply constructing a pretty building.
"Other businesses will see that the community is serious about economic development because we spend $35 million building a new airport facility," Barham says.
The current airport is more than 50 years old and has been remodeled seven times.
FAA funding will pay for most of the municipal airport improvements.
The new airport terminal should be complete by 2015.
