Paducah School Board Fires Principal Charged with Indecency with a Child

The Paducah School Board unanimously decided to fire its high school principal and coach Jay Cantrell after he was charged with multiple counts of indecency with a child and one count of sexual assault.

The Texas Rangers began investigating the 43 year old after he was put on leave with pay after allegations brought by students.

Cantrell was arrested and released on $200,000 bond. Paducah Superintendent Troy Parton would not release any more details last week, other than requesting that people not draw conclusions during the investigation, and told KFDX news he was extremely upset we would even call requesting information on a negative story.

Cantrell replaced former basketball coach Charles Willison who pleaded guilty in February 2010 to an improper relationship with a student.

Cantrell took over as basketball coach and principal in 2010 and his team went 29-7 and took the state championship in March of 2011. Two of his adopted sons played on that team.

His wife Lara teaches at the elementary school. The couple gained attention during the team's run for the state championship for their adoptions of four boys of different races from troubled homes.
