Police: Man leads authorities on high speed chase

Authorities said a high speed chase could have easily turned into a worse situation if off-duty officers hadn't joined in the pursuit of a suspected armed felon Saturday night.

According to Archer City Police Chief Justin Perron, an officer saw a gun in a man's waistband while conducting a traffic stop on Hwy. 25.

He said the suspect put the car in reverse and struck an officer's patrol car as he drove away and later on nearly rammed two other law enforcement vehicles.

Archer Co. deputies successfully deployed spike strips, then, the suspect led authorities to his home and attempted to run inside, Perron said.

He said law enforcement officials attempted to tase the suspect several times without any effect and then the Archer City police sergeant who originally conducted the traffic stop was able to take him into custody.

The man is expected to be charged with three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, evading arrest in a vehicle and possession of methamphetamine.

Perron said the chase reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour but law enforcement officers were uninjured with the exception of the arresting officer who suffered minor injuries when he took the suspect to the ground.

The suspect also had long knives in the trunk of the car which are now legal to carry in Texas, according to Perron.

An Archer Co. constable, a game warden and a state trooper also assisted during the chase.
