Premature Baby Gets Local Care Thanks to Children's Miracle Network

"We had been married for a year and a half before we decided to try and have a family. I went to Dr. Horth because I had a hole in my heart when I was born. So just to make sure my heart was healthy enough I had an ultrasound done of it and she found that the hole in my heart was gone, but I had a tumor on my liver that needed to be removed," Ashley Shoeder explained.

Tumor removed and Ashley fully recovered, the Schroeders were soon pregnant. But six weeks ahead of her due date, her water broke and Libby was born.

Dad Chance said, "I was glad she was out. Glad all of the doctors and nurses were there. Respiratory therapist. Pretty much soon as she hit the ground they took her over there to the corner and I would say for 45 seconds and then they were gone. We asked to see her and they just held her up on the way by."

Weighing just five pounds three ounces and in respiratory distress, she was rushed to the nursery, stabilized, and put on a CPAP machine in the neonatal giraffe bed. It would be hours before she, Chance and Libby would be together.

"The first time they wheeled me in I saw this tiny human being with cords that weighed more than she was and it was overwhelming to see how much she was hooked up and the things she wasn't able to do on her own yet and it was just devastating. You don't want your baby to start off that way," Ashley said.

Libby was in the United Regional nursery for 16 days using equipment made possible by donations to Children's Miracle Network. Today she is thriving and healthy.

"I would not have been able to go with my baby to Fort Worth. Just making a one dollar donation at checkout makes all the difference for a family. Look at us. We wouldn't have been able to be together the first couple of days of our baby's life. And that's devastating for families. Just a dollar makes a huge difference," said Ashley
