A group of Wichita Falls kids learned that reading is power this summer, and were awarded on Saturday because of it.

This is the second year the East of the Falls Education Committee partnered with the Wichita Falls Housing Authority to host the Reading is Power summer program.

All summer, the kids worked on phonics, fluency, and comprehension.

And on Saturday the kids were awarded prizes in recognition for how far they've come during these past few months.

Organizers say the program had volunteers from all over the community come out all summer to read with the kids.

They say Saturday was special for the volunteers and the kids.

"It's an award celebration you know and just to encourage the kids and give them some motivation for going back to school next week," Education Committee Chairman Desi Arnez says.

The committee hopes to be able to host the program again next year.

And organizers they are always looking for volunteers.
