Recent Murder Awakens Past Murder Victim's Mother

An Easter Sunday shooting has re-awakened sad memories for a murder victim's mother, whose son was killed by the father of the suspect arrested in Sunday's shooting.

Willie Hervey Junior, 21, is jailed for capital murder.

Wichita County Sheriff's office says Mark Hawkins, 20, was found on his porch on River Road with a gunshot wound to the chest under his right arm.

Hervey's father, also named Willie Hervey, is serving a 30 year sentence for a 2000 murder.

Fourteen years ago this month, police say the Hervey Sr. shot a friend, Quincy Harper, 23, after the two had quarreled.

Harper's mother says she remembers her son with a tree she planted.

She says she has forgiven Willie Hervey senior for the murder.

But the recent shooting has opened the old wounds.

It's still hard. It will forever be hard. If you have never lost a child, you wouldn't understand. But it hurts. The wound might heal a little bit, but its always there real deep and just to see my son's name the other day and to see the scene because I never got to see that, and re-live that, and it hurt. It brought back a lot of memories,” said Rhodessa Harper.

Rhodessa said she was in jail on drug charges when her son was killed, so she wasn't able to attend the funeral.

She says that made seeing images and names from her son's murder recently even more difficult.
