Hopefully it's a problem they won't have to face much longer.
An upcoming phase of the drainage improvement project here along McNiel will also see improvements to the intersection with Southwest Parkway.
And for residents who live in this area, many are are thrilled to get this project going and when it does rain, keep the water at bay.
“Water that will come all the way up to, on our driveway,” says McNiel Avenue Resident Jene Phillips.
Phillips says it doesn't take much rain on her street to cause problems in front of her house.
“It's hard to get out unless you have a car that's lifted like our Tahoe, but a lot of cars will come through here and they die,” says Phillips.
And when the water eventually does find a way to drain off McNiel Avenue, a mess is left behind.
“You will see this big line of trash and leaves in everybody's yards,” says Phillips.
Phillips says she is ready for construction to start, even though adding new drainage boxes may be an inconvenience for some.
“Construction is never easy to deal with especially when it's right in front of your house. But we hope that the inconvenience is worth it in the long run, so that every time that it rains, they aren't worried about water coming up,” says Deputy Public Works Director Teresa Rose.
The city does have plans to meet with those who live in the project area after they have a contractor, hoping they can come up with a plan that will make it easier on everyone.
Phillips also says even though she hasn't seen water get inside her house, she hopes the drainage can be fixed before a major storm does roll through. While technically her house isn't in a flood plain, she says she doesn't carry flood insurance.
Construction is expected to start in June with the Southwest Parkway portion, then will move to McNiel. Construction is expected to last a little over a year and the whole project is expected to cost around 7 million dollars.
