The Red River Rocketeers is a group that started as a classroom project, but now has blossomed into an educational opportunity for those in Duncan.
"As we try to get students interested in deeper mathematics and deeper science it needs to become applicable. You can't just give them a bunch of notes or drawings on a board and expect them to relate,” said Bill Leyrer.
Bill Leyrer is an electronics and aerospace teacher at the Red River Technology Center.
Three years ago he started a group with his students: The Red River Rocketeers.
Since then Leyrer says community support has risen substantially, making this school club into a full-blown community event, an event that is rewarding to hardcore rocketeers and novices alike.
"It's the fun it's the fact that you have taken something that you have basically constructed yourself, and actually watch it go."
A majority of the students in Leyrer's class attend each weekend launch, the students say they love spending their weekend hanging out with their teacher, shooting off rockets.
Student Kris Ross said, “He makes it real fun to work there, he is really interactive with everybody, teaches anyone anything they need to know, he is just on top of everything at all times. He is just an amazing teacher."
"As one of the younger students, I'm really trying to fit in and try to get to know all of the other guys. And they make it really good for me because they really help me with all of my studies, really make me feel like part of the family, a big weird nerdy family,” said student Sammy Coker.
A family that has it's eyes set on the ultimate prize.
"They say that the first step into space began with a model rocket and we hold true to that, we believe deeply in that concept,” said Leyrer of the importance of model rocketry.
If you are interested in making a rocket of your own, you can go to a local craft store and pick up a model rocket kit, the kit should take no more than a day to finish.
