SAFB Under Consideration to House Illegal Immigrant Children

KFDX has confirmed Sheppard Air Force Base, along with all U.S. military bases, is under consideration to house additional immigrant children if needed, and if the base has the facilities.

Lt. Col. Tom Crosson of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, told KFDX all U.S. military bases were required to report by yesterday any they may have for temporary housing of children.

According to the request, bases were required to report any buildings now not in use with a minimum 24,000 square feet and 15 acres of clear land around them. Crosson says he believes all bases have made their reports.

We could obtain no information from the base on what facilities, if any, Sheppard may have reported could be available. Currently only Fort Sill and two other U.S. military facilities are being used to house children. Crosson says the Department of Health and Human Services will review the list of bases and decide if they want to use the facilities.

He says criteria for considering base housing requires the facilities under consideration must be vacant and the housing of children can not disrupt the training or other missions.
