Santa Rosa Roundup Is Underway In Vernon Texas

Rancher,  E. Paul Waggoner organized the Santa Rosa roundup to celebrate and preserve the history of early ranch life-- back in 1946.

Just a few years later the Santa Rosa Palomino club really put the roundup on the map-- with their performance and Katya Guillaume was able to speak to one of the longest running members of this distinguished club.

Gene Tyra tells me that after 52 years, he's not ready to put up his horse-- just yet!

"A group of young men that wanted to add to the rodeo and they do military drills." Kenneth Baxter- Palamino Club Member

Since 1949, the Santa Rosa Palomino Club has saddled its horses and performed at events all over the states.

"We will go wherever we can go. We've been to the Rose Parade. Since I've been in, Colorado Springs."  Kenneth Baxter- Palamino Club Member

And the list goes on…Gene Tyra has been a member of the palomino club since 1965 and even after breaking a leg 4 years ago, he looks forward to each and every ride.

"Of course it's fun first off. You've got good friendship and everything like that is good, it gets into you and it just kind of grows on you." Gene Tyra Longtime Member

And it has grown on all of the 24 members who currently make up the club…

"We've been as high as 50 members in the past and it would be great to get it back to 35 or 40 again."  Gene Tyra Longtime Member

Although the number of members may be smaller these days, the impact the club has had over the years is huge.

"You know it's amazing what this organization has done for Vernon Texas, we get Vernon out front." Gene Tyra Longtime Member

For the next few days, people from far and wide will gather in Vernon at the Santa Rosa arena for nights filled with rodeo action,  live music, dancing and of course a performance by the talented and long-standing Palomino Club.

If you missed their performance tonight-- you can still catch them in action.
They will perform at the roundup each night.

The rodeo gets underway each night in Vernon at 7:30.

Tickets are 12 dollars at the gate, you can also enjoy a dance. Friday and Saturday nights.
