City councilors could have a recommendation for a new Wichita Falls Fire Department chief within the next 60 days.

City Manager Darron Leiker says he's currently going through the 43 applications he received for the position.

Leiker says he wants to narrow down the search process to about 10 applicants in the next week or two.

From there, he says he'll reduce the pool to six applicants who will be interviewed.

After 31 years with the department, Chief Earl Foster retired earlier this month.

Chief Jon Reese is now serving as interim chief.
