Seventy-six-year-old Ramon Hernandez, a bus monitor for Durham School Services, died after police say a landscape boulder, believed to be 2 by 3 feet, caused three vehicle accidents at the Iowa Park Road overpass around 5:15 Tuesday morning.
Officers believe a car hit the boulder, cracking it into pieces. Then Hernandez hit one of the cracked pieces going southbound on the highway. Authorities say Hernandez then pulled into the right center traffic lane to check on his vehicle, when another car hit one of the boulder pieces, which made the car collide into Hernandez's parked car.
The investigation is still ongoing and officials are asking anyone with information on how the boulders got there to contact the crash investigator, Paul Harper at 397-2516.
Meanwhile, a rosary service for Hernandez will be Thursday evening at 7 at Owens and Brumley Funeral Home and a funeral liturgy will be Friday morning at 10 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
