The decision to reverse the earlier plan came because the actual cost of the well water was about 7 times the original estimate. Instead of $2,000 a week for the water, the base learned it would be closer to $2,000 per day.
82nd Mission Support Group Commander Col. William Peterson said though the base as a wholesale water customer of the city could use city water, they immediately rejected that possibility.
And Peterson added if the base kept the pools open with trucked in water, they would be competing with the city for the available water supply for Castaway Cove and other facilities, which would drive the price even higher.
The base has four pools and the main pool will remain open until June 16. The others are closed now. Peterson says the base is working with the city to arrange a reduced price or subsidized passes to pools and Castaway Cove.
