The bitterly cold weather has shoppers buying up winter supplies in area stores.

Whether at chain stores or small, family owned ones, like Berend Bros in Wichita Falls, winter weather items are flying off shelves stores.

They range from salt or ice melt for sidewalks and driveways to cold weather covers for faucets and pipes and scrapers and de-icers for vehicles.

Many chain stores, like Auto Zone, have sold out of winter supplies for vehicles but managers at Berend Bros say their shelves are still stocked.

"We were planning for this so we had plenty on stock.  We keep a barn full on back stock.  It's ready to come out," says John Landrun, assistant manager at Berend Bros.

Landrun says hay is a hugh seller for Berend Bros with 100 bails sold Thursday.

And he says most of the bails went to dozens of customers who bought 30 gallon bags of hay for dog houses, chicken coops and other pens to keep animals warm during the cold weather.
