Simpler Veteran's Day ceremonies touch hearts

SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE - Many veterans day ceremonies around the nation, are often very solemn and full of rich Ceremony. But sometimes it's the simpler ceremonies that touch the heart.

At a time when the Star-Spangled Banner seems to divide more than unite, at Sheppard Air Force Base Elementary School, being united in support of our military seems to be the norm.

Each year, parents, grandparents and others gather to hear the students recite poems, sing songs, and share in the common bond of being part of a military family--no matter from what country you're from.

"My kids are helping out a lot when they're home and we talk on the phone as much as we can back home in Denmark," said Jette Fertz.  Fertz is the wife of Captain Magnus Fertz;  a nearly 20 year veteran of the Royal Danish Air Force. "He's an instructor, involved in the NATO program. So, we send pilots over from Denmark and other countries."

Fertz says her husband has been deployed once to Afghanistan and returned home safely. Though home now and working at Sheppard,  the job still requires long hours--something that can be hard for a young child to get used to.

"We usually forget he's deployed, hang out with our friends and family," said Fertz's daughter, Clara.

But still, they admit, dad's job is pretty cool--as far a child understands it.

"He gets to fly and try to fill up the plane with gas in air," Fertz's son Linus, pointed out.

And although the full scope of what dad does may not be understood just yet, on the subject of Veterans Day, these students are at the head of the class.

"That means that people fight for our freedom," believes Linus Fertz. "I'm just thankful for the veterans that sacrifice their lives to protect our constitution and our country," added Clara Fertz.

And though Veterans Day is just one day, Jette Fertz believes every American can display their gratitude every day of the year.

"Be thankful when you meet someone in a uniform and thank them for what they have done. That's why you're here today."

Happy Veterans Day to all veterans: Near and far.
