Snowfall Causes Havoc on Wichita Falls Roads
Snowfall on Friday afternoon caused some major havoc on many of Wichita Falls roadways.
Wichita Falls Police responded to more than a dozen accidents in a short period of time, and the total number's gone up substantially since then.
Jody Wade, president of Big Daddy's Towing and Recovery says as soon as overpasses became slick, they saw their workload climb. ]
"It's been extremely busy, which we kind of had some time to prepare for this. We got all the snow during the day and we knew 5 o'clock was going to be a mess," Wade says.
Wade says they had over 20 trucks stationed around the city ready to jump into action.
Also, he says wrecker crews face their own dangers out on the roadways.
"Especially with slick roadways and people not paying attention, we're working an accident scene and they come up on it and slam on their brakes so then it puts everybody in danger at the whole scene and so the quicker we can get there to get that scene moved out of the roadway, the more lives that we protect," Wade says.
He encourages drivers to stay home if possible.
If drivers have to be out, Wade says decrease your speed, brake gently and leave yourself plenty of room to stop.
"Black ice is hard to see," Wade says. "As the night goes on, it's going to be difficult to tell where the roadways are slick at so we just urge people to be very careful and be cautious to emergency vehicles out there for their safety."
Wade says wrecker crews will be out all night in case they are needed.
