Storm Damage Closes Shelter for the Day

- Gusting winds from the storm took the roof off a row of kennels at the humane society but the building was not the only issue workers had to deal with today.

This display of nature did more than light up the skies early Friday morning. It also caused this damage at the Humane Society of Wichita County. It was not the welcome back new shelter interim director, Cheryl Miller, had expected. She arrived just before 7 a.m. and noticed several things out of place.

"At first I thought the green fiberglass had fallen off and was leaning against the kennels.  Then when I got out of the car I noticed all the fencing was down and all the dogs were out of their kennels," Miller says.

Miller says 19 dogs were wandering the grounds, including this terrier pit bull mix that had an injured leg.
Workers and volunteers got the dogs back in kennels but officials say as one of them got a closer look inside the damaged area this sheppard mix was found pinned under this fence.

"There was four of us right here and we all lifted it up.  It's heavy but we managed to get it up high enough for her to crawl and she crawled straight this way," says Russell Heineken, who found the trapped dog.

"I crawled under.  Pulled the dog out.  She's fine.  She doesn't have any broken bones or anything.  She's a little scuffed up and I have her at the veterinary clinic as well," Miller adds.

Shelter officials say the storm also knocked out power and phone service for several hours. And while insurance will help repair the damage, the shelter is still taking donations to help cover its deductible and the vet costs for the two injured dogs.

Hirschi Realtors is collecting donations for the Humane Society. You can drop them off all next week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at their office on Maplewood Avenue.
And since this morning we're told $200 have been collected. An insurance adjuster will assess the damage at the shelter early next week but officials say the facility will be open for business as usual this weekend.
