The first evaluation period is complete for a new WFISD reading program.

"Read 2 Learn," gives struggling elementary students a chance to read three times a week with a volunteer mentor, and at one school the results are tasting pretty good.

Thirty-one second graders at Sam Houston were caught munching down some Chick-Fil-A chicken.

Tuesday afternoon's snack was a reward for the students who, program officials say, all moved up a reading level.

And they say it just shows the impact of the program.

“If you have someone reading to you, you are going to advance. One on one is just a great thing to have. I think if we had more of these reading buddies, I just think about how great these scores would be,” said Kim Schobert, the “Read 2 Learn” Coordinator at Sam Houston.

Currently “Read 2 Learn” serves 180 second graders at seven different Wichita Falls elementary schools.
