Students in Burkburnett ISD to Receive iPads

Students in Burkburnett schools can expect changes this school year as district officials get ready for a new digital era in the way they teach.

Stacey Darnall, principal at John Tower Elementary, says tablets will play a big role in a child's education this school year.

Darnall says Burkburnett ISD is getting ready to roll out thousands of iPads to every student in the district over the next few weeks which they say will change the way their students learn.

She says technology has always played a role in classrooms in the district.

However, this year they are taking technology to the next level as each student and teacher will be armed with their own iPad.

"Not only to just have a device in their hand but to truly change how they are thinking and solving problems critically, changing their thought processes and problem solving," Darnall says.

Darnall says pre-K through second grade students will receive iPad minis while the rest will receive an iPad Air.

She says teachers will receive training on how to better integrate this technology in their classrooms.

"It is to change how we teach," Darnall says. "To make what we do even better and to take their level of thinking to ways that they could have never taken it before."

Burkburnett ISD Director of Technology Jason Stutz says it's a huge undertaking to get close to 4,000 iPads, valued at $2.2 million, ready for students.

"Our first concern is safety," Stutz says. "We provide Internet filtering through that device and iPads will filter even off site at their house or the mall or McDonald's or wherever they may be."

In addition, he says, "Everything has to be considered. Every detail from what type of case will keep the device safe in the hands of say a 4 year old pre-K students."

Stutz says high school students will be the first to get their new tablets around Sept. 15 but first, district officials and Apple will host a digital citizenship plan on Sept. 11 where students and parents will learn more about the iPads.
