Suspected serial rapist may soon be released

WICHITA FALLS - A man Wichita Falls Police suspected was a serial rapist when arrested in the late 90s may soon be released from prison, and authorities are seeking to have him committed to the state hospital when released so he can be monitored and treated as a sexually violent predator.

Such commitment hearings are now required to be held in the county where the most recent crime occurred and it's believed to be the first of its kind here.

Gregory Allen Jones, 52, is serving sentences in the Allred Unit for four convictions, including aggravated sexual assault with a weapon and attempted sexual assault.

He was arrested after he was spotted hanging around the Tiffany Place Apartments which was in the area where several sexual assaults were reported. Police investigated his possible involvement in eight sexual assaults or attempted assaults. Police also suspected he could be linked to other sexual assaults in other cities and states.

In Tuesday's hearing, a medical witness said Jones has been diagnosed with HIV and has a sexual impulse problem. Jones testified he didn't commit the alleged crimes in the 90s, but he agreed to plead guilty to avoid a possible stiffer sentence from a jury. He said the incidents were mistakes, such as his watch catching on a woman's skirt, causing it to lift up when he pushed another woman to the ground because he thought she was robbing him. And another incident in Wichita Falls when he went to visit a friend and entered his apartment through the window, but went through the wrong window.

Jones said he patted the woman in that apartment down for weapons even though she was only wearing panties, and he said the necklace and VCR he was accused of stealing were gifts from the woman.

The hearing will continue Wednesday.
