That's according to reports from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.
That's one reason TxDOT and DPS are raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.
A badly wrecked vehicle is displayed out front of the Texas Travel Information Center.
Officials say the damaged car shows what could happen if you take your eyes off the road, if only for a second.
Trooper Tony Fulton with Texas DPS says, "Driving a car is the most dangerous thing most all of us will do every day. A lot of times, because driving becomes a second habit, that's probably a thing we give the least amount of our attention to."
Fulton says drivers need to refocus their attention on the task at hand and should not become involved in any other activity while behind the wheel.
