A new Texas Wildfire Prevention Task Force has been created to prevent a repeat of last year's massive wildfires that scorched most of the Lone Star State. Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples says the goal of the task force is to maximize wildfire prevention and strategies across the state.
Last year more than 4 million acres across Texas burned, mostly as a result of the drought.
"We know that last year was the worst wildfire in the history of Texas this Wildfire Task Force will bring together the best minds across Texas to work on mitigation on how we can reduce fuel loads," said Commissioner Staples.
Commissioner Staples says he's worked with legislation to identify tools that will limit the spread of wildfires. He says trying to control the fire is more costly and more difficult than eliminating the fuel sources before a wildfire starts.
