Texoma Sounds Off on Possibility of Alcohol at Gun Shows

- The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is considering a proposal that would allow alcohol to be served at gun shows in Texas.

But Wichita Falls Gun and Knife Show Promoter Joe Tom White says there are just too many stipulations that come with the rule change such as gun buyers not being able to take home guns from the events that he says would hurt business.

“What kind of example are you setting for young people if you have a gun in this hand and a beer in the other,” says White.

He says the stipulations that come with the proposed TABC amendment would hurt business.

Those include banning live ammo, disabling fire arms and not allowing buyers to take guns home right away.

Something one gun and knife show attendee says will not work.

“That would be a problem with me. If I buy a gun I want to be able to take it with me,” says Wichita Falls Resident Dave Stroup.

And White says those proposed changes are unnecessary because his shows are already safe.

He says all ammo is sealed up and guns have safety ties so they can't be fired.

But no amount of safe guards would make Wichita Falls resident Mary Garza feel safe, especially if alcohol was involved.

“Just the idea of guns in the first place just send me up the wall and the fact that people can drink and have a gun, you're just adding craziness to the whole situation,” says Garza.

Ultimately, White says the potential changes would be problematic because people would just go to a pawn shops or other stores that would not have the strict rules.

If the new regulations are passed, a written agreement between the venue owner and the gun show operator must be approved by the TABC a month in advance before alcohol can be served.

Before the issue goes to a vote, the TABC is asking for the public to weigh in on the potential changes online.
