All 298 passengers were killed and the U.S. believes pro-Russian separatists were behind the attack.
This has lawmakers in Washington, including 13th District Congressman Mac Thornberry, wondering how the US will respond.
In his statement today, the president called for an immediate ceasefire between Russia, pro-Russian rebels and Ukraine's military forces.
While Thornberry says he supports that decision, he says overall, the president's remarks today were disappointing.
Thornberry says he wishes President Obama would have told the American people the same thing and would have strongly said what he was going to do in this situation.
"The contrast is if you look back at what President Reagan said and did after the Korean Airline was shot down in 1983, he was very clear in his language, very specific in what he was doing to isolate the Soviet Union, and he called on Congress to increase defense," Thornberry says. "I think President Obama needs to do the same thing."
The congressman says an independent investigation is necessary so that Russia does not take over and report untruthful information.
