Investigators: Clay County Boy Shot and Killed by Stepfather

CLAY COUNTY - Residents of a rural Clay County area where a young boy was shot and killed this week say they are shocked and never want another child to suffer such a horrible tragedy.

Three year-old Dominic Castro was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the head yesterday morning in the hospital.

His stepfather,18 year-old George Coty Wayman, is charged with capital murder.

The arrest affidavit for Wayman states the Clay County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call at 2:56 pm Tuesday from a fifth wheel trailer between Joy and Vashti off FM 174.

The caller reported that a 3-year-old child was shot in the head and they believed he was dead.

Initially, authorities say witnesses told them the boy was jumping on the bed and and caused a gun on the bed to accidentally discharge.

But officials said witnesses finally revealed that George Coty Wayman pointed the gun at the boy and told him if he didn't stop jumping on the bed he would shoot him, and he fired the gun and struck the boy in the back of the head.

They say evidence in the bedroom of the trailer corroborates the witness's account.

Two days after a tragic shooting in front of this trailer, toys still fill the yard. But no children are using them.

His mother is staying in a nearby home, and family members say she did not want to comment, but  before we were asked to leave, one family member said this behavior wasn't like Wayman.

Matthew Biehl lives just across the street from where the little boy was shot. He said things like this just don't  happen in that community.

"Wow...I would've never thought in my life I would see something like that happen around here, especially in a peaceful little place like this," said Biehl.

Biehl said he wasn't at home at the time of the shooting, but arrived shortly after.

"It was just an unbelievable site," said Biehl. "They landed a helicopter in the intersection. I didn't know exactly what was going on. When I found out what was going on I couldn't believe it."

And he said he wants the shootings of innocent children to stop.

"We don't want no more of it," said Biehl. "We want to put a stop to this, that's all I know."

The boy's father has been in prison since 2014 for convictions in Wichita and Young counties, and was denied parole in January.

Clay county Sheriff Kenny Lemons said there are currently no plans at this time to pursue charges on witnesses who reportedly gave false information or possibly obstructed the investigation.
