The unemployment rate has fallen substantially below 5%, both in the city, and the 3-county metro region. From our research it appears to be the first time it's been below 5% since May of 2008.
The rate for the city has fallen to 4.6% from 5.2% in March and almost 6% a year ago.
For the 3-county region, the rate has fallen from 5.6 percent a year ago to 4.4 percent for April. It was 5% in March.
The state average is now 4.7%. Jack County has the lowest rate in the region, and the only rate below 3%. Analysts point out many long term unemployed do not show up in the statistics because they no longer are eligible to file for unemployment, or have stopped looking for jobs.
