Trooper Tony Fulton says 17-year-old Derek Duncan of Olney told investigators he was driving the vehicle.
But several days after the accident, Fulton says Duncan's family members called investigators and told them the teen who died in the accident was the driver.
The one-vehicle accident happened just after 1:30 p.m. last Tuesday on Highway 79 near the Archer-Young County line.
Troopers say the car driven by 17-year-old Zachariah Spears, also of Olney, left the roadway, but rolled several times when spears over-corrected.
Spear was taken to Olney Hospital, where he later died.
Investigators say at this time, they don't know why Duncan, the survivor of the crash, gave them incorrect information.
