Vernon officials say the city's financial situation needs to improve in order for it to continue running efficiently.
The Vernon City Commission addressed the city's critical financial situation during a meeting on Tuesday.
Vernon Mayor Joe Rogers says for the last several years, the city has been taking money from the Utility Fund and putting it in the General Fund.
Rogers says utility funds are used and needed to make repairs to the city's water fields.
In this year's proposed budget, $740,000 will be transferred.
Rogers says if this continues, the city will not have money to make repairs to the city's water system.
He says the city is asking all departments, including fire and police, to make sacrifices.
Rogers says, "What we want to do is raise revenue and reduce expenses so we're trying to reduce our expenses by 10% across the board and then raise revenue and leave that gap. Then we can leave some of the money in the Utility Fund."
There will be a public hearing held to discuss the proposed budget next Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at city hall.
Rogers says the city is also proposing a 10% increase to their water rates.
School district residents are also looking at a tax hike.
