The Texas Workforce Commission presented a big check to Vernon College on Tuesday to help provide training to two local industries.

The Skills Development Fund Grant, worth just more than $415,000, will help Tranter and P&WG Component Repairs advance the skills of its current and new employees.

Those trained will include welders, machinists and blenders.

Vernon College President Dr. Dusty Johnston says the grant will help the community in the long run.

"It increases and enhances the workforce that we already have," Dr. Johnston says. "This is a way to bring in training. It's one of the things Texas Workforce Commission understands that a good strong workforce is good for the economy of Texas and its certainly good for the economy of Wichita Falls."

The money is expected to start being used after Christmas.

Johnston says they will also apply for additional grants.
