Vernon Man Gets 15 Year Sentence

A Vernon man is sentenced to 15 years in prison after pulling a knife on his girlfriend and holding it to her neck.

It took a Wilbarger County jury less than 20 minutes to find 47 year old Damon Thomas guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a two day trial.

The incident happened in Vernon during an argument on March 20 of last year.

According to testimony, Thomas put the knife up to her throat and said, "dare me".

District Attorney Staley Heatley says the woman's mother saw the assault too, and pleaded with Thomas to stop before he threw the mother's cell phone and told the women to get out of the house.

Heatley says they called 9-1-1 from down the street while hiding in bushes, and Thomas was arrested about a month later at a hunting camp in rural Foard County.

District Judge Dan Mike Bird presided over the trial and assessed the sentence.

Thomas, who chose to represent himself, will be eligible for parole after serving half the sentence.
